About Josiah Hampton

As a recent graduate from the UW Mechanical Engineering department I am motivated, focused, and excited to begin my career. As a first-generation college student and black man in an underrepresented field, I am extremely proud of myself for earning such a difficult degree. The hardest part wasn\'t the long nights studying, tirelessly applying to hundreds of internships, or having to work part-time jobs to pay for tuition. But the most challenging part was visualizing life past the degree. It is hard to visualize success in a career that isn\'t predominant within your community. I want to be the one who positively influences kids who look like me, to go for something of this magnitude even if it doesn\'t seem possible. Post graduation I am driven and passionate to diversify and inspire change within my field and even outside my field. I have interests in sustainable energy and the built environment which I expect to propel me personally and professionally. Working with Mckinstry, I utilized Excel and Bluebeam to analyze and benchmark data to increase energy efficiency. For my capstone project, we streamlined Seagen\'s spare parts ordering process for the critical utilities in one of their manufacturing sites. This was achieved by updating their asset management system, Maximo. Moreover, we implemented a base reliability model for the estimated time to failure, hence estimating the time to order spare parts for the boilers and air handling units. Besides these experiences, I have developed various abilities working on diverse teams during my time in the univeristy. I visualized designs in three dimensions using computer-aided design, tested the strength of 3D models and assemblies using finite element analysis, and utilized Matlab and Python to analyze stress data for projects involving the mechanics of materials.
