The MEDIVANCE team developed a comprehensive engineering project aimed at improving patient safety and workflow efficiency in operating rooms by addressing the issue of inaccurate estimated blood loss (EBL). Research indicates that 70% of EBL calculations are inaccurate, with errors ranging from 52–85%, leading to potential delays in life-saving transfusions or the unnecessary use of blood products. In response, the student team designed GauzeGuard, a surgical gauze tracking device equipped with a weight scale and laser sensor system to accurately calculate the amount of blood absorbed by gauze during a procedure. Originally created to reduce retained surgical items by counting gauze, the design pivoted to prioritize EBL after direct feedback from medical professionals during a hospital visit. The team followed Project Lead the Way’s engineering design process, progressing through problem identification, concept generation, decision matrices, CAD modeling, prototype development, and real-world testing. GauzeGuard is designed with hospital constraints in mind, including sanitation requirements, ease of use, and compliance with FDA Class 1 equipment standards. A digital display complements the system by displaying gauze count, total weight, and looks to display calculated EBL in real time in the future. In testing, the prototype received strong ratings from eight registered nurses at Middlesex Hospital for its versatility, performance, and user-friendliness. This proposal outlines the development process, data-supported decision-making, and critical design refinements, offering a meaningful and innovative solution to enhance surgical care.
