Mechanical Engineer @US Navy

View department →

San Diego, US

Currently I am working for the US Navy as a mechanical engineer. My responsibilities range from bringing instruments on-line, doing statistical analysis on data, and writing calibration procedures. Specifically I bounce between the Materials Lab and Metrology Institute on base supporting the production of aircraft and ship engines. Recent projects include improving precision and specification of toxic trace gases generated in the cockpit by FTIR, chemical analysis of plating operations using ICP and automated titrators, thickness measurements of radar absorbing paints using eddy current probes, as well as supporting the production of reworked LM2500 gas turbines.

ABOUT JOSH MALOWNEY

I’m a highly enthusiastic engineer with 10+ years of experience in product development. I would like to apply for this position as I would love to be a part of a thriving company. I believe my broad expertise, together with my persistent and innovative nature, allows me to be an invaluable addition to almost any team.Currently I am working as a materials engineer for Decision Sciences. Decision Sciences makes large-scale sub-atomic particle detectors for border defense. There I revamped existing components with improved materials and developed a new component from the ground up. Specifically, I experimented with various adhesives, alloys, and coatings in order to achieve higher hermetic seals and decreased electrical break down properties. I worked closely with manufacturing to reduce unit cost while enhancing reliability. At Decision Sciences I started an R&D wing from scratch and met development deadlines.Previous to that, I designed and managed industrial heat exchangers for power plants. This entailed performing the thermodynamic calculations, writing all the technical specifications, vendor management, and contract adherence. That position required complete technical responsibility of the multi-million dollar vacuum air cooled condenser for the steam turbine exhaust. Before that I worked in Europe as a nanotechnology researcher and completed a Ph.d program in Material Science. The work was on finding novel approaches for magnetic memory devices and specifically on writing with an electron beam to make perovskite nanowires with side research into making nanodot films from imprint lithography. There I worked extensively in a cleanroom with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Previous to leaving for Europe, I worked as a manufacturing engineer for General Atomics Aeronautical Division working on the Predator A. There I was a member of team of engineers responsible for increasing production efficiency and decreasing manufacturing errors. Concurrently, I completed a Master’s degree in physics at SDSU focusing on thin films.Thank you in advance for your consideration and I truly look forward to meeting you where we can discuss how I could contribute to the needs of your company.
