ABOUT JOSH KILGAS
Nonprofits are full of talent and heart. But too many leaders are forced to learn the importance of good governance the hard way.I fell in love with the nonprofit sector after time in law enforcement. I saw human suffering up close, often in moments of crisis. I also saw how limited that angle can be when you only get involved after things have already gone wrong.During an undergraduate internship at a nonprofit, I saw a different side of the story. Not just crisis response, but prevention, learning, and innovation. Organizations were doing community studies, analyzing data, testing what worked, and showing up even when there wasn’t a quick win. They were tackling some of the world’s most complex problems. That internship set my direction. I never left the sector, spending the next decade in various roles alongside nonprofits of all shapes and sizes.Over time, I noticed a pattern: what often shows up as common problems like fundraising issues, unclear direction, micromanagement, or lack of support is frequently rooted in something more foundational: governance clarity. When shared expectations between boards and chief executives are misaligned, even the best organizations can get stuck, and momentum slows. That’s why I created Solutions for Changemakers. I help small to mid-sized nonprofits strengthen governance and connect it to strategic direction, so leaders can move forward with clarity and alignment. I’m also a BoardSource member consultant, contributing to and drawing from the national conversation on nonprofit governance and leading practices. What I focus on:•Governance training and board development•Strategic planning adapted to the needs of each nonprofit•Governance coaching and support for chief executives and board chairsIf you’re an executive director or board chair who wants stronger governance and strategy that matches your organization’s reality, message me here on LinkedIn or email me at J•••@SFChangemakers.com
