ABOUT JOSH BATES

I’m a Managing Associate in Freeths’ Liverpool office with over six years’ experience in Financial Services Regulatory law.I advise a broad range of clients on all aspects of financial services regulation, including insurance, reinsurance and alternative risk transfer, discretionary benefits schemes, credit-related regulated activities, regulated claims management, funds, CISs and AIFs, and regulated home finance. I have a particular interest in the regulation of digital assets and cryptoassets, including stablecoins.My regulatory experience spans due diligence, perimeter and compliance guidance, change in control advice, and transactional insurance support across M&A activity, property transactions, environmental projects, and insolvency proceedings.Beyond financial services, I also advise Solicitors Regulation Authority-regulated and Bar Standards Board-regulated individuals on non-contentious regulatory issues and structuring — particularly in the context of M&A, litigation funding, and private equity investment.I enjoy public speaking and podcasting, and have delivered both in-person and remote careers presentations for students, as well as CPD training for law firms, members of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, and members of the Association of Insurance and Risk Managers in Industry and Commerce.Outside of work, I train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and occasionally (albeit with two young children. less frequently these days!) head to the Welsh and Scottish mountains for some mountaineering.
