Director, Shields Center for Innovation @Boston College High School
Boston, MA, US
The Shields Center for Innovation believes each student can build their innovation mindset and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. We create the conditions that form action-oriented problem-solvers who understand self, others, and context. Through partnerships with our local and global innovation ecosystems and communities, students engage with real-world, real-time challenges. As students identify opportunities, experiment, reflect, and iterate with those they are serving, they recognize their own agency to make an impact.

ABOUT JOSEPH MCNAMARA
I believe that opportunities at the intersection of education and innovation provide young people with the agency to make an impact. At BC High, I create the conditions, culture, and curricula that form each student’s innovation mindset and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. We form students who understand who they are and what calls them; explore social challenges, technologies, and industries; connect with innovators; and practice problem-solving, embracing ambiguity, and navigating uncertainty. We partner with students, communities, and innovation ecosystems to engage students in real-world innovation. Students practice action-oriented problem solving, commit themselves to finding better ways to address opportunities, and deploy their innovation mindset in service to others. As the inaugural director of the Jack Shields ’79, P’06 Center for Innovation, I put students at the center; lead the strategy for embedding innovation across our students’ BC High experience; and develop students’ head, hearts, and hands through experiential learning-Want to learn more, partner, or collaborate? In four months, at the start of the pandemic, I created a new online, four-college credit academic program for rising high school juniors and seniors — 2020 Babson Summer Study for High School Students Online. The program was an interactive, engaging, and student-first experience. Highlights include 53% of our program’s high school seniors applying early to Babson; a financially sustainable model with high demand; meeting the same learning goals as our in-person program; and engaging 148 students (270% of goal), 16 guest speakers/volunteers, 15 Academic Mentors, eight faculty, and two interns. In addition, I led our residential Summer Study program with a focus on our academic program, operations, and business model. I partnered with a Costa Rican school to develop a country-wide entrepreneurship ecosystem rooted in PK-12 education. Other initiatives included teacher training programs and online convenings led by youth changemakers.
