About Joe Joseph Swantek

I’m leading cyberinfrastructure software development for SAGE, a National Science Foundation-funded project as an employee of Northwestern-Argonne Institute of Science & Engineering (NAISE). Through SAGE, we’ve designed, developed, and deployed a novel sensor platform with advanced edge-computing capabilities to fuel sensor-driven environmental research in rural areas and cities alike.As a software lead, I’ve introduced Agile and Scrum methodology, boosting the team’s productivity and providing a guiding light. I’m the domain expert in the edge-computing Ubuntu-based operating system that was heavily customized for the fleet of NVidia-based edge nodes enabling scientists to run custom applications in remote outdoor environments. I have comprehensive knowledge of the entire cyberinfrastructure, from the edge nodes’ Kubernetes cluster of microservices to the graphical and API user interfaces. I direct the team, project plan, and coordinate software releases to a live service while also owning a chunk of the infrastructure.As a senior software engineer at Gogo, I learned then-new technologies such as Docker, and expanded my own Python skills as part of the build team that established and maintained the pipeline for building all of Gogo’s airborne software artifacts. I also created, maintained, and supported a global network of Debian-based edge computers enabling our customers to establish a virtual private network (VPN) to Gogo development environments to accelerate collaborative development to meet software release schedules.I spent the first 12 years of my career at Motorola, most recently as software lead for one of Motorola\'s most ambitious projects, the Moto Insta-Share Projector, while also contributing as a software development manager for the display and graphics team. I helped design and deliver cutting-edge solutions in the mobile computing market, including the Motorola Moto X and Motorola Droid family of products.I thrive in a team environment and am interested in clean energy, autonomous driving, movies, AR, and gaming.
