ABOUT JOSEPH MCKAY

Boards, executives, and mission-driven organizations face increasing complexity as they grow and change. I help them make sound decisions grounded in fiduciary responsibility, governance, and institutional judgment. My work focuses on using law as a practical tool for decision-making rather than an abstract exercise, with particular attention to risk, accountability, and long-term stewardship.Currently, I serve as Co-President of the Society of American Law Teachers, holding elected national leadership responsibilities for governance, finance, and organizational strategy.I also serve as General Counsel to the Lewis Latimer House, a nationally recognized nonprofit museum, advising the board and executive leadership on governance, compliance, and institutional oversight. At the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, I am a Visiting Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the Community Economic Development Clinic. In this role, I direct a transactional law clinic representing nonprofits, small businesses, and entrepreneurs, while supervising real-world legal matters involving governance structures, compliance, risk management, and organizational growth.Teaching and practice emphasize preparing students and organizations to exercise sound judgment under real responsibility, where decisions carry legal, financial, and reputational consequences.Licensed to practice law in Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Nevada, and New York, I bring a collaborative, judgment-oriented approach to leadership and institutional decision-making.
