ABOUT JOSEPHINE OZOLS-RIDING

I lead work on housing and health for the Department of Health and Social Care.My role is principally concerned with influencing national housing policy which aims to improve the quality of new and existing housing from a health and environmental perspective. I work closely with the Department for Levelling Up Housing and Comunites and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.A key part of my role relates to advising public health professionals, planners, architects and the housing sector more broadly, on the health risks of poor quality housing and the strategies and design considerations needed to improve the quality of new and existing homes.I regularly collaborate on research projects related to housing and health and/or climate change and provide input into housing schemes from a health perspective. My role is varied and includes work strands related to: healthy housing design, the social and economic case for higher design standards, fuel poverty interventions, energy efficiency, climate adaptation, overheating, damp and mould, accessible housing, low carbon housing, housing innovation, the planning system, the impact of poor quality housing on the healthcare system, developing the evidence base on housing and health and the use of housing and health data within local authorities to drive standards. As the housing lead, I work closely with a wider team of national experts on healthy places, including air quality, green infrastructure, the planning system (beyond housing), nationally significant infrastructure, and sustainable transport. I work closely with other government departments focused on housing and the environment.I\'m also part of the Design Council\'s Expert Network and sit on the board for the Housing Studies Association and the Future of London Health and Housing Impact Network.Always keen to connect and collaborate on research/projects related to the built environment, health, and/or climate change, so do get in touch. In my spare time I enjoy architectural photography.
