Project Title: “Higher Education in Prison: Censorship, the Carceral State, and the Neoliberal University”An extensive literature review on the influence of censorship and other constraints on higher education in prison (HEP) and on the ways in which carceral state and university politics promote racially biased and neoliberal justifications for HEP.A taxonomy of the higher education in prison programs in Connecticut to gain insight into how the goals and course offerings of Connecticut HEP programs compare to justifications and desired outcomes within the literature.

ABOUT JOSEPHINE BURKE
Hello! My name is Josephine Burke and I am a junior studying Political Science, Human Rights, and History at the University of Connecticut. I am passionate about understanding the role of global political structures and institutions in order to move towards the advancement of liberatory, justice-based practices and a better future. My leadership, research, and community engagement experiences have concentrated on addressing historical and contemporary issues within the criminal justice and legal systems, examining the role of higher education in the advancement of Indigenous knowledge systems, and tackling climate change challenges. By analyzing existing structures and examining the interplay of law, political theory, advocacy, and language, I aim to contribute to developing informed and effective solutions for these pressing social issues.
