Hapa Collaborative is a landscape architecture and environmental design practice established with placemaking, attentiveness and collaboration in mind. We see each project as an opportunity to partner, to dream big and to synthesize ideas wrought from many, often opposing, influences. Our goal with each commission is to evoke the poetry of the place and in doing so reveal something delightful but perhaps previously unseen. Most of all, Hapa Collaborative is a new voice for contemporary landscape design and a small, agile and fresh alternative to traditional landscape architecture practice. With over 15 years of experience around the globe, Hapa Collaborative works within the full breadth of scales from master plans to pocket parks, civic spaces to private residences, streetscapes to green roofs. However we like to specialize in landscape urbanism, commemorative sites, residential gardens, public art, and community participation. We like to explore new methods and materials, forge new relationships and ultimately build places that people remember. Since it\'s inception Hapa has been named winner of four competitions: the Canadian Navy Monument in Ottawa in 2009, Vancouver Carpet, our submittal for the Where\'s the Square Ideas Competition in 2010, Market Lane Design Competition in London Ontario in 2011, and Darn, our proposal for the Re:Connect Open Ideas Competition in Vancouver in 2012. We are also the recipient of several CSLA awards including Koo\'s Courtyard in 2013, Mid Main Park in 2014, and Terra Nova Play Environment and McBurney Lane in 2015.

ABOUT JOSEPH FRY
I am a landscape architect, small business owner and design entrepreneur based in Vancouver, registered in British Columbia, Ontario, Washington and Oregon and principal landscape architect and owner of my practice, Hapa Collaborative. Hapa means many things: half, mixed, or hybrid; a pejorative term for someone of mixed ethnicity – which I am - and by extension, anything shaped by the collision of cultural influences. Hapa aptly describes the places where I live and work – Vancouver and Richmond - and also defines my profession: landscape and architecture, nature and culture, art and craft. Hapa is also a Japanese word for leaf. With two decades of experience throughout the region, Hapa Collaborative works within the full breadth of scales from master plans to pocket parks, civic spaces to private residences, streetscapes to green roofs. However we like to specialize in landscape urbanism, commemorative sites, residential gardens, public art, community participation, new materials, and designing with water. I\'m also proud to be husband to my wife Louise and dad to my awesome kids Daniel and Madeline.
