About Joseph Fridman
I head up comms at Convergent Research, a non-profit dedicated to filling in the gaps of our critical scientific infrastructure. I\'m based in Queens and am working on a JD through CUNY\'s School of Law. I also lead projects funded by the Templeton Foundation aimed at helping scholars write for the public, including the Beyond the Ivory Tower writing workshop taught by New York Times editor James Ryerson, and the Line Edit podcast and video series. We\'ve helped 100s of academics write short pieces about big ideas for wide audiences. From 20••••26, we’ll host fifteen writing workshops. If you have a PhD, you should apply! Previously, I was a Director (of Comms and Corporate Affairs) in the Sociotechnical Studio at Ginkgo Bioworks, the employee-owned organism company, where I worked for about five years. Ginkgo’s mission is to make biology easier to engineer. I led our external (across PR and IR) and internal comms functions and am passionate about our culture of worker-ownership.I was the inaugural Editorial Fellow at the Scholars Strategy Network, and did a yearlong research assistantship at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Relations\'s Technology and Public Purpose project, led by the late Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. Previously, I was a researcher and science communicator in the Interdisciplinary Affective Science Lab at Northeastern University/Mass. General Hospital, co-run by Lisa Feldman Barrett and Karen Quigley. I freelance widely as a researcher, consultant, and producer, in particular in the start-up tech and audio worlds. I executive directed the Sound Education festival and conference in 2018 and 2019. I serve on the boards of two Nunnian educational institutions: the Telluride Association and the Sand Mountain Cooperative Education Center.
