About Joe Steele
I aim to apply my skill sets in biomedical engineering, materials science, and project management to team-based product design, development, and implementation. At Colgate-Palmolive I am a founding member of the Biomaterials and Advanced Delivery Division in the Research and Innovation Group. In this role, I use my interdisciplinary experience in materials science, formulation, controlled release, in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo models to lead scientists to improve and develop a pipeline of products for the hard and soft tissues of the mouth. The internal innovation program is complemented with insight into marketing, regulatory classification, ease of formulation, preservation, academic collaboration, and external technology identification.A previous role as the Additive Manufacturing and Materials Science division lead at the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials focused on 3D printing of implantable polymers and drug-loaded degradable devices for biomedical applications. Tissue systems and in vivo models of interest included neural regeneration, scar reduction, bone health, and vascularized allografts. This role provided insight into the complexities of optimizing models for efficient determination of in vitro in vivo correlations of drug elution. A unique early opportunity was the establishment and co-management of the Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine division and laboratories at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the largest biomedical research centers in Europe. There I investigated the application of functional polymer chemistries, bioactive protein fragments, and ceramics to fibrosis reduction, cell-material interactions, and new additive manufacturing technologies for tissue regeneration. My foundation lies in my PhD in Materials Engineering and Bioengineering at Imperial College London, UK in the lab of Prof. Molly Stevens, one of the preeminent global biomaterials labs. There, I had the opportunity to develop an osteochondral scaffold from initial concept through pre-clinical large animal trials in a porcine model.
