ABOUT JOSEPH Z.

I am a current college journalist at Columbia University where I serve as a University News Deputy Editor, pitching stories and writing articles for the Columbia Daily Spectator. On Spectator, I have written dozens of stories regarding campus protests surrounding the Israel-Hamas war, as well as stories covering Columbia administration, academics, campus events, and more.I have also had the chance to interview Columbia President Minouche Shafik, ABC News anchor David Muir, Rep. Dan Goldman, and Rep. Kathy Manning, network with several journalists from national media outlets like NBC, ABC, and POLITICO, and attend press conferences held by House Democrats and by House Speaker Mike Johnson, along with House Republicans.Previously I was part of my high school newspaper, The Crusader at Archbishop Riordan High School, where I covered campus news like the creation of our multimedia magazine, NBC Bay Area visiting our campus, and the final graduating class to experience our high school while it was still single-gendered, as well as several national & world news events. I was a part of The Crusader for all four years of high school, starting off as a staff reporter my freshman year and rising up the ranks to become editor-in-chief my senior year. I also took pictures at a wide array of school events.My highest achievement as a student journalist has been winning the NSPA/JEA National Student Media Contest at the National High School Journalism Convention in both April 2022 and April 2023, ranking superior–equivalent to first place–for the news editing/headline/current events category.I have interned at several Bay Area companies, including KQED, and I am a current intern on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt in New York City. All of these experiences–including those that were not related to journalism–have allowed me to acquire basic workplace skills and experience a professional work environment, helping me prepare to pursue future journalism opportunities, with the long-term goal of a career in broadcast journalism.
