The Black School is an experimental art school teaching BIPOC and ally students to become agents of change in their own communities through art and design workshops and public projects that address local community needs. Co-directed by Joseph Cuillier and Shani Peters since 2016, TBS has, served over 700+ students, facilitated over 175+ workshops and classes, produced 5 Black Love Fests with trained and employed 35 design apprentices, partnered with 85+ organizations, and supported 85+ professional artists. Building on our programmatic success, TBS began construction in November 2024 on a 21st century schoolhouse that will function as a community center in New Orleans\' 7th Ward. The forthcoming building will be made of 5 recycled shipping containers with metallic copper paint, reclaimed wood shutters, a community chalkboard wall, a solar roof, community garden, gallery, makerspace, and garden.
