About Joseph Bresee
Dr. Joseph Bresee, MD, is the Director of the Partnership for Influenza Vaccine Introduction (PIVI), a key program at the Task Force for Global Health (TFGH) focused on creating sustainable respiratory virus vaccination programs in low- and middle-income countries.With more than three decades of experience in influenza and vaccine research, Dr. Bresee began his public health career at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in 1993. From 1995 to 2005, he focused on rotavirus disease and vaccine development, helping to ensure that rotavirus vaccines were made available to children both in the United States and globally.He went on to serve as Chief of the Epidemiology and Prevention Branch within CDC’s Influenza Division, where he led global influenza surveillance, burden estimation, vaccine policy development, and avian and pandemic influenza response. In 2017, Dr. Bresee was named Associate Director for Global Health Affairs in CDC’s Influenza Division, where he strengthened partnerships with global public health agencies and spearheaded initiatives to expand influenza vaccination worldwide.A board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Bresee earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Washington/Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters, and continues to contribute to national and international advisory groups on immunization and influenza. He is a retired Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service.
