About Joseph Barnes
I have over seven years experience as an environmental scientist and researcher. My background is in aquatic ecology, but I have branched out into environmental education, communication, and policy analysis. I earned my Master\'s of Science in Environmental Science from American University in May 2023, where I researched the effects that freshwater biofilms have on aggregating microplastics from the water column. I successfully defended my thesis with distinction. My microplastics research was the culmination of all my previous work and skills as I managed my own field work, lab work, scientific writing, presentations, partner and coalition building, and public outreach.I have worked in non-profit/ NGO, academic, and industry professional settings. Through work, volunteer, and coursework, I am an accomplished scientific researcher, data analyst and visualizer, and communicator. I enjoy the rewarding work I do and hope to continue having a positive meaningful impact on our aquatic environments.
