ABOUT JÖRG SPANGENBERG

Designer, Architect, Urban Planner & Researcher.as a young world citizen and architecture enthusiast 4D aka Jörg Spangenberg had, as he says:\".the tremendous opportunity to work for six months in Oscar Niemeyer’s office in Rio de Janeiro\" in 1998/99. The vision and sheer creative output of the, then 92-year-old Niemeyer, deeply impressed me, it spoke to my heart and feelings! The walkable concrete sculptures which shape Brasília\'s horizons I perceived celestial - yet \"hot open spaces with no shade\", I noted then and there. Sustainability was emerging: In 2004 I was awarded with a Master\'s degree in Engineering at the Institute for Technology and Resource Management (ITT)), from the Technical University of Cologne, after defending my thesis on urban climate. It was a detailed urban microclimate study of Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã district, including ENVImet simulations (Bruse, 1998). Spangenberg continued his academical career with a broader research on nature-based solutions entitled \"Nature in Megacities - São Paulo, a case study\" modelling and quantifying the environmental services delivered by all yet existing urban vegetation within the municipal boundaries of the Megacity of São Paulo. The PhD research at Bauhaus University in Weimar and FAUUP São Paulo was funded by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction in Zurique from which he also received two further prices though the designs for a sustainable retrofit of the Goethe Institute in 2005 and the Enkyo Health Center in 2011, both located in São Paulo. With the main intention to transform the theoretical bases into applied design research he funded the NGO floresta urbana in São Paulo in 2008. floresta urbana’s activities range from urban interventions in the public spaces to executed green roofs, green facades and urban rooftop farms constructions. Spangenberg acquired the structural design contract of the stadium to open the FIFA Soccer World-Championship 2014 in Brazil, later named Arena Corinthians, for Werner Sobek in São Paulo in 2011. He supervised the construction site throughout the complete planning and construction process. Further activities for Werner Sobek Engineering + Design were the introduction and adaptation (tropicalisation) of the DGNB System to the Brazilian climate and market reality. Since 2012 Spangenberg is a certified DGNB Consultant. Between 2012 and 2018 I also lectured Building Physics, Landscape and Urban Planning at São Judas University Tadeu. Since 2020 I work as architect and sustainability consultant for kadawittfeldarchitekur in Aachen.
