About Jon Poehlman
I am a scientist in RTI International’s Communication Practice Area and serve as the Director for the Center for Communication Strategy and Design. I have more than 20 years of experience conducting social and public health research. My educational background is in applied anthropology and includes course work in public health, social marketing, and urban planning. My research has focused on people’s shared or cultural cognitive models and how these shape or influence social behaviors. Methodologically, my expertise is in ethnographic and qualitative research methods, including interviews, focus group discussions, and analysis of structured, qualitative data using data reduction techniques. Current and past projects include developing social marketing campaigns aimed at promoting routine testing for HIV/AIDS, assessing physicians’ use of digital clinical decision support tools, and promoting demand for male circumcision in African countries. I have also conducted HIV/AIDS prevention research in the country of Malawi and continue to conduct international research projects. I have a number of peer-reviewed articles and I am a fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology.
