About Jon Gjemso
I am a first-generation Latino engineer, researcher, and designer with a strong foundation in both mechanical and nuclear engineering. Throughout my career, I have collaborated with high-profile companies, technology startups, and national laboratory teams, consistently striving to develop solutions with integrity, ingenuity, and passion. I am fortunate to be part of the team at the National Ignition Ignition Facility (NIF) responsible for the Ignition breakthrough in 2022, and currently works on designing systems that will enable the next generation of Nuclear Fusion experiments.
Experience
Target Diagnostics Engineering Group Leader
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
May 2024 — Present · San Francisco, CA, US
Engineering Group Leader for the Nuclear Diagnostics team comprised of approximately 10-15 engineers, technicians and scientists at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). I oversee the planning and budgeting for the team, as well as provide technical guidance to the project leads in developing novel diagnostics in support of Ignition shots at NIF. The portfolio of nuclear diagnostics that we support provide vital feedback to the experimental design physicists which resulted in achieving fusion ignition in the laboratory for the first time in history (target gain>1).
