Dr. Thornburg has a PhD in Aerosol Physics and Engineering with over 15 years of experience in applying his expertise to aerosol exposure studies, CBRN fate & transport, and indoor air quality. His expertise is in understanding the sources, transport mechanisms, and environmental factors that determine the concentration and temporal variability of particulate matter and CBRN concentrations in ambient and indoor environments. His experience conducting laboratory and field research covers data collection and analysis to project management. He has collaborated on large, multi-disciplinary projects as well as smaller team projects. His aerosol physics research ranges from particle adhesion studies to particle transport within buildings to aerosol instrumentation development and performance characterization. His aerosol instrumentation development is applicable to his personal exposure assessment research. These new instruments, along with innovative analytical methods, were created to improve our ability to accurately assess inhalation and dermal exposure to contaminants. His exposure research experience varies from large, multi-pollutant, longitudinal studies of children and adults to focused, contaminant specific investigations. He has developed and applied novel models that predict aerosol concentrations in a person’s breathing zone in both ambient and indoor environments. He is very knowledgeable about various methods for developing experimental matrices and analyzing data.
