JONATHAN SYKES, PE, VICE PRESIDENT OF ADVANCED APPLICATIONS, Protection, Control, and Automation, has always collaboratively leveraged technology to close gaps and champion success. In the 1990s, Jonathan’s teams provided the first integrated protective relay/RTU/SCADA systems in Arizona. In the he pioneered the first wide-area protection scheme based on IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging. In the 2010s, Jonathan’s team implemented one of the most advanced PMU and synchrophasor systems in North America. Under Jonathan’s direction, his teams developed leading-edge concepts in asset life cycle management for mission-critical systems and developed new techniques and processes to transform the aging grid into a reliable, sustainable, and affordable grid of the future. While at Luma on Puerto Rico his teams focused on planning and replacement of infrastructure in the substations and transmission system that had been damaged due to neglect, lack of maintenance, and by multiple hurricanes. Presently, the Advanced Applications teams are providing solutions as the changing grid moves to 100% renewable Inverter Based Resources (IBR), low to zero carbon-based emissions, and modernized protection, control and monitoring systems.

I have always been passionate about the electric power industry and has helped me throughout my career. Now is my chance to return that support, and help guide the and our industry through the greatest change in over 100 years.I am passionately driven to establish a sustainable and reliable electric grid through robust Protection and Control System designs and skilled work force. I believe that we must all participate as a cohesive and diverse team. With must partner with academia, regulatory, manufacturing, contracting, consulting, utilities, and our customers.
