About Jonathan Carey
I approach science as a language, one spoken through experiments, interpreted through data, and refined through iteration. To me, research is a dialogue with nature: we pose questions by adjusting experimental parameters, and nature responds through outcomes. My role is to translate that conversation into actionable insight.I specialize in optimizing complex systems with many influencing factors, accelerating R&D by focusing efforts where they matter most. My work bridges engineering precision with biological nuance, enabling breakthroughs in diagnostics and therapeutics. At Abbott Labs, I helped develop a high-throughput blood analyzer. A biotechnologist among engineers, my focus was minimizing contamination risk in an induction-heater subsystem. Using response surface methodology and design of experiments (DoE), I screened dozens of variables, identified key drivers, and delivered a dataset that empowered engineers to design effective wash sequences. At AGTC, I applied this experimental rigor to gene therapy. I designed and executed a large-scale screen of nearly 100 micro-RNA sequences to degrade a toxic transcript. This involved mammalian cell culture, rAAV production, stem-loop RT-qPCR, and custom assay development. The results identified promising candidates that advanced through the pipeline. At Moderna, I supported DMPK studies across multiple programs. I improved bio-distribution assay transferability by integrating automated pipetting systems and harmonizing lab methods for CRO scalability. I also designed RT-qPCR assays for challenging RNA targets, requiring advanced primer strategies. My work included leveraging AI tools for experimental design—an exciting frontier in translational science.I’m drawn to solve problems that combine scientific depth with engineering mindset where experimentation is strategic, data is decisive, and innovation is the goal. If that sounds like your cup of tea, I\'d love to connect!Let me know what type of experiments you\'re working on!
