ABOUT JONATHAN MILLER

Jonathan D. Miller is currently the Director of Security and Emergency Management for Hackensack Meridian Health - Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair, New Jersey. The hospital is an acute-care facility, has 396 beds and serves Northeastern Essex County. A part of the Hackensack Meridian Network, Mountainside Hospital is one of only two for-profit hospitals in New Jersey. It is also a clinical campus and affiliate of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and provides clinical clerkship education for the medical school\'s osteopathic medical students.Prior to his work for the medical center, Mr. Miller was a School Security Specialist certified by the New Jersey Department of Education and worked for a regional school district. He is also a retired New Jersey Police Captain with over thirty years of experience in public safety, emergency management, school security, and is considered a subject-matter expert. He is a New Jersey certified Safe School Resource Officer and an A.L.I.C.E. certified train-the-trainer. In addition to his vast law enforcement and security credentials, Mr. Miller has many years of experience as a certified police instructor, school security presenter, EMT/CPR instructor and volunteer ambulance technician. His experience and training also includes directing an 18 person security force at the medical center, developing emergency management plans and drills, constant review of security operations, K-12 school security operations, behavioral threat analysis and security climate initiatives. Mr. Miller served on the Bergen County(NJ) Prosecutor’s Safe Schools Task Force. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration and is a current member of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety, as well as the ASIS International Healthcare and School Safety and Security Councils.Mr. Miller saw a void in communication when dealing with school security so he formed a working group with other security specialists. After obtaining the support of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the Bergen County Association of School Security Professionals (BCASSP) was founded in 2017 and Mr. Miller served as its president until February of 2022. This organization was the first of its kind in the State of New Jersey and is recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education’s Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning.
