Tour Guide @Edith Farnsworth House, A National Trust For Historic Preservation Historic Site
Plano, IL, US
The Edith Farnsworth House is one of just three residential properties designed and built by Mies van der Rohe. It is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Every year, thousands of visitors, interested in architecture, or just curious learn how an example of the International Style of Modern Architecture found its way to rural Illinois drop by. I and my colleagues take them in and around the house, but just as importantly, we take them through the history of the house as well as the history of the relationships which made it both cutting edge in style and controversial in the way it was and continues to be appraised.

ABOUT JOHN MORELLO
My university. A good relationship. I was good for them. It was good for me. I taught, I wrote, and I published. Together, we served-or tried to serve our students. But, time goes by, and it\'s time to move on. But before I go, a word about what I\'ve learned, and what I can teach. When you spend twenty-six years talking to people, you learn that while no two audiences are alike, they’re not that different. That’s what teaching does; you identify the person with the talent but not the confidence, the one with too much confidence, and the ones who are anxious, eager, receptive, bored or hostile. I would never say I\'ve seen it all, but I know how to keep a situation under control while still moving forward. In another life.I worked for a political consulting firm. I managed campaigns. Mostly,I managed people. I managed candidates, their supporters, and their critics. It’s not easy walking into a room where everyone wants to see you fail. But I know how to work a room. There are ways of changing the trajectory of the conversation. If you can turn someone who’s on the wrong side of the fence into a fence sitter, then you’ve earned your keep. I also managed the press, or tried to. I know that while you should never engage in a war of words with people who buy ink by the barrel, there are ways of framing the discussion and turning what looks like a direct hit into a glancing blow. And, I worked in broadcasting. I learned to write with precision and imagery. Television can tell a story with pictures; radio has to tell it with the right words said at the right time, and with the right voice. Handled well, the written and spoken word can leave a lasting impression. I\'ve also become fairly fluent in Spanish, and can read French pretty well. Portuguese? I\'m working on that also. When you\'re a Fulbright Specialist, having an extra language in your back pocket comes in handy. So, lots of tools in my toolbox waiting to be used.
