ABOUT JOHN KUYT

John Kuyt is a tunnelling engineer based in Arup’s Manchester office. He has a strong multidisciplinary design background for both soft and hard ground settings, with further experience in soil-structure interaction, site work through multiple on-site supervision roles, and academic research advancing the state of the industry. John has worked with Arup in their offices in Manchester, Liverpool, New York, and San Francisco. His recent design experience has included TBM tunnelling in soft rock, analysis and design of tunnels constructed via the sequential excavation method, segmental and cast-in-place concrete linings, soft ground tunnel design, rock shaft and cavern design, design of structural foundations, and numerical modelling of structures and ground in 3D. Additionally, he has been significantly involved in design management, on-site design engineering, and technical advisory roles for both clients and design-build contractors.Incorporating aspects of digital engineering into tunnel design is integral to John’s work. His developing skillset in parametric design, 3D BIM, numerical modelling, and programming complement the efforts of the team in delivering designs with quality and efficiency.John’s diverse experience in technical design and analysis, design and project management, and on-site engineering roles is enhanced by his use of digital techniques to improve the quality of his projects to achieve key client outcomes.
