I realized very early in my career that the data network industry is very much a “people business.” Every customer has unique needs. Developing IT solutions tailored to each customer’s unique needs requires learning about and examining every aspect of their business, including their finances, objectives, and physical environment. This requires constant communication, interaction, and a willingness to build and nurture relationships with customers, as well as engineers, manufacturers, providers, suppliers, vendors, and all the other parties whose participation is critical to the successful completion of every project.It also requires educating, which I have accomplished during my career by providing technology instruction to architectural and engineering firms, end users, senior executives, and sales teams.When mentoring employees over the years, I have coached them to listen carefully and ask questions – and to “hear” what is not being said. I insist they always keep the client’s best interests in mind, even if doing so means losing them to a competitor.
