John Halkyard

About John Halkyard

Dr. Halkyard is an ocean engineer with over 50 years experience in deep ocean system development, including deep ocean mining and floating production systems (FPS). Between 19••••80 he was Chief Ocean Engineer and Director of the Ocean Mining Laboratory for the Kennecott Consortium, one of the pioneers in the development of deep sea manganese nodule mining. From 19••••07 he focused on deep water oil & gas drilling and production. He was one of the original architects for the very successful Spar concept for deep-water oil production. In 2011 Dr. Halkyard co-founded Deep Reach Technology, Inc.(DRT) to support the renewed interest in deep sea mining. DRT provides services and develops proprietary technology. In 2016, Dr. Halkyard founded Ocean Minerals, LLC (OML) to pursue exploration of seafloor rare earth enriched sediment and cobalt rich polymetallic nodules in the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone. In 2022 OML was awarded one of the first Exploration Licenses by the Cook Islands to explore their nodule deposits!Concurrently Dr. Halkyard lectures and teaches internationally on offshore engineering. He was a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 20••••14, and served in a similar role at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia from 20••••17.Dr. Halkyard is a Fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and Life Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is also a Member of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). He is a registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in California (since 1982). He has served on the Marine Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Engineers, and is on the International Professional Advisory Panel for the University of Hawaii, School of Ocean Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). He is a past member of the Oversight Committee for OTC Asia.Dr. Halkyard received his B.S. in Engineering Science from Purdue University in 1966, and his Sc. D. in Ocean Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972.
