About John Padgett
As the leader of McGuireWoods’ transportation industry team and managing partner of the firm’s Norfolk, Virginia, office, I have worked on a broad range of transportation projects including the construction of the largest private container terminal in North America, the construction of offshore wind turbines and the salvage of the Titanic. I have over thirty years of working on legal issues impacting the transportation community. My experience allows me to work with clients to develop sophisticated transportation and logistics strategies. Norfolk is a maritime community. McGuireWoods’ uses this strategic location to support clients from all over the globe. My experience includes cargo issues, shipping regulations, international trade matters, maritime law, alternative energy projects, and disputes relating to all aspects of a client’s logistics and supply chains. I work with regulatory authorities such as the US Coast Guard, Marad, the Department of Homeland Security and Customs to resolve issues that confront transportation clients. A deep understanding of the intermodal world allows me to handle matters at all stages of the shipping process. I work regularly with clients attempting to understand the restrictions imposed by the United States on foreign ownership of maritime assets and how to organize and structure entities to comply with the Jones Act. I recognize the value of community service. I have served as the Chair of a variety of organizations tasked with improving the quality of life in Hampton Roads. Some of my leadership positions include chairing the boards for the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, Tidewater Community College, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, and leadership positions with the Hampton Roads Economic Alliance. I am a member of the Maritime Law Association, the Virginia Maritime Association, the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute, and the Association of Transportation Law Professionals.
