Georgia Public Defender Council
May 2024 — Present · Atlanta, GA, US
The Office of the Mental Health Advocate (OMHA) was created by statute in 1996 to provide services to attorneys representing criminal defendants with mental health challenges. OMHA monitors cases in Georgia involving pleas of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) and directly represents insanity acquittees. We provide services statewide as a way of assisting attorneys, hospitals, and the courts in criminal cases involving mentally ill defendants. As an intern, I conducted in-person interviews with clients, updated legal research, and filed motions/scheduled court dates on behalf of senior attorneys and their clients. I worked on-site at jails, and medical examiners\' offices, and toured death row to gain a profound understanding of our criminal justice system in Georgia.
