In 1983 when I started servicing the Pro Sawing and Drilling market, all the wet cutting diamond blades that we sold to the Pro market were “custom” items and were not usually stocked. The Pro contractors kept records on the performance of each blade, and how long they lasted and how fast they cut. If the life was short or the production rates were slow, and in the operator’s opinion, we would have to issue a credit. This meant that as a salesman, you would have to go to the jobsite on a regular basis and watch your product being used. You’d always try to get a good review from the operator by bringing the operators coffee and donuts.A favorable review meant a repeat order on the blade. Of course, there were always new product developments that either made the blade last longer or cut faster, which meant I was constantly “testing” and upgrading our products to keep up with the competition or try to beat them and secure that next order. Having the best blade for that area meant getting into everybody’s business in that aggregate area, because when you had a great blade, operators would quickly spread the news.Having to develop the specifications for a diamond blade to work in that aggregate area, on that size saw was my job. I spent a lot of time doing on site testing and product development and had to learn quickly how to develop diamond blades. In those days, manufacturers did not maintain much stock in certain areas especially where the aggregate was exceptionally hard and product life was short. It\'s not just about the hardness or softness of the bond, but about the diamond size, quality and concentration levels.
