ABOUT JOHN WILLIAMS

I am currently a SQL Server DBA working at Cantium Business Solutions within the DBA team. Daily I use SQL Server 2008R2, 2012, 2014 and 2016 to support over 550 databases across 40+ instances to serve numerous systems used by the Kent County Council ranging from social services, property, highways, education plus many more. I support database, application and web servers for production, test and development environments with some higher priority systems being extended to 24x7 support. In addition to BAU work, I\'m involved with numerous projects including new systems, migrations and system enhancements. My main focus of work is SQL Server databases, but to support this I have a ground knowledge and range of IT infrastructure skills (OS, applications, hardware, networking and virtualisation (VMWare)) that I use to help plan, optimise and troubleshoot the SQL estate.I have experience of many technologies within SQL Server across all versions including HA/DR technologies for clustering, AlwaysON, mirroring and replication. Indexing & optimisation, patching & service packs to ensure PCI compliance, server & instance health checks, backup & restore with SQL Server and Netbackup and troubleshooting BAU issues.I’m currently part of the project team to conduct a full migration of the SQL estate to an IaaS platform in Azure. Previously I have successfully completed full SQL estate migrations to decommission a considerable amount of hardware and reduce licence count to a VMWare based blade infrastructure.Personally, I’m currently pursuing the MCSA in SQL 2016 Database Administration certification.
