About John Nowlin
I use GIS and remote sensing in the Delta, Mid-South and Southeastern U.S. on projects relating to agronomic practices and surface/groundwater infrastructure connected to the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer (MRVA).My students, research associates and I have publications that: investigate physical site suitability, analyze terroir, determine the boundaries of vineyards and appellations, validate the use of drone photogrammetry for elevation/irrigation planning, combine remotely sensed multispectral imagery and elevation surfaces to generate inventories of reservoirs, use historic satellite imagery to quantify changes in reservoir construction over time, model surface water/groundwater fluxes in the MRVA, assess managed aquifer recharge using infiltration galleries, and use machine learning techniques to model groundwater level changes in the Cache & Grand Prairie Critical Groundwater Areas. We are currently working on: analyzing spatial variability in cotton-peanut rotations in Northeastern Arkansas, creating inventories of precision graded fields, analyzing post-harvest burning practices, conducting smoke modeling, identifying winter flooding of crop fields for waterfowl habitat, and analyzing adoption of precision grading in Arkansas farmland.I am also the recent Past President (July 20••••26) for the AAG-Wine, Beer and Spirits Specialty Group and in 2024 I authored the proposal for the West Tennessee AVA.At UNCG I taught: Intro to Earth Science, Intro to Environmental Studies, Intro to Sustainability Studies, Intro to GIS and The Environmental and Sustainability Studies Capstone. At AState I teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate Agriculture (AGRI), GIS and Environmental Science (ESCI) courses:AGRI: 3103 Regenerative Agriculture Fundamentals, 4103 Regenerative Agriculture Practices, 619V Thesis, 638V Independent Study, 6263 Regenerative Agriculture Systems, 6393 Non Thesis Research Experience.GIS: 3503 Geospatial Data Applications, 3543 Fundamentals of GIS/GPS, 4512/5512 Drone Applications in Precision Agriculture, 4743 Principles of Cartography, 4543/5543 Understanding GIS, 4773/5773 Remote Sensing, 4843 GIS and Precision Agriculture Capstone, 489V Special Problems in GIS and Precision Agriculture, 5043 GIS Bootcamp, 6543 Environmental Raster Data and Models, 6843 Applied Geospatial Research.ESCI 613V Independent Research in Environmental Sciences & 689V Thesis.Among others.
