ABOUT JOHN VAN DER EERDEN

John van der Eerden, M.Eng, P.Eng, serves as the Vice-President of Water Resources at Associated Engineering (AE), a role in which he provides leadership and support to the company\'s Water Resources practices across Canada. His comprehensive experience covers a wide variety of Water Resources Engineering projects extending from urban drainage to large river systems. This experience includes hydrology, water management, flood control, urban drainage, stormwater management, dyking and drainage, and river engineering. Based in Vancouver, B.C, his projects span across Canada and beyond.This background gives John a broad perspective on the issues and challenges facing our water by past practices, current processes and possible future changes. It also provides him with the tools, insight and collaborative mindset to evaluate, recommend and implement effective strategies that are based on listening to diverse perspectives, understanding shared values, and following paths that lead to positive outcomes.John provides technical leadership and support on structural and non-structural approaches to flood hazard management, such as the development and application of Bylaws and land use management decisions. He continues to advance knowledge related to climate change impacts, including helping the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) develop National Standards for the hydrologic and hydraulic design of bridges under changing conditions.Mr. van der Eerden has maintained significant involvement with professional organizations throughout his career, which he notes has enriched his experience and kept him current with local, provincial and national initiatives.• Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA): John is the President of the Canadian Water Resources Association. He is a Past-President of the BC Branch of the CWRA and has been actively involved at both the Provincial and National levels since 1991, serving on the National Executive since 2006.• Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Transportation Association of Canada (TAC): John has been actively involved in addressing non-stationary issues (including climate-change) for the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. He was also a contributing Author to the Transportation Association of Canada’s Guide to Bridge Hydraulics (ver. 3).John maintains professional engineer status with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, and Professional Engineers Ontario.
