ABOUT JOHN SOTTONG

I possess over two decades of experience working side-by-side with companies and countries of all sizes to address some of the world’s most pressing climate change, energy and international development issues. I offer a track record of environmental leadership, managing and working with integrity and respect for others, and finding innovative solutions to stubborn problems. I have been nominated to the Roster of Experts, and have been a frequent speaker at environmentally-focused workshops, conferences, and web-events. Key Accomplishments • Managed the technical program for the world’s largest private sector greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction initiative—the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Climate Leaders program. I negotiated, benchmarked and approved dozens of aggressive GHG reduction targets with Fortune companies. • Spearheaded the Science-based Target Initiative’s (SBTi) development of criteria and guidance for corporate net-zero target setting. Co-author of Foundations for Science-Based Net-Zero Target Setting in the Corporate Sector, Sept. • Authored the International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) flagship climate publication, Climate Investment Opportunities in Emerging Markets: An IFC Analysis. The report identified $23 trillion worth of climate-smart, private sector investment opportunities in 21 emerging market countries—a figure frequently and prominently used across the World Bank Group today. • Assisted over a dozen countries on developing meaningful climate change pledges—Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)—in the global, year-long sprint towards the historic 2015 Paris Agreement. • Nominated as an Expert by the U.S. State Department to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Roster of Experts.
