John Smolak is a Partner and Co-Founder of Smolak & Vaughan LLP. His practice is concentrated in the areas of land use, environmental, and real estate development law. Prior to forming the firm in 2004, John was Co-Chairman of the Real Estate and Environmental Group with Burns & Levinson LLP in Boston. John has represented property developers, private equity firms, institutional owners and others throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He has developed a reputation for being involved in some of the more high-profile development projects in the region, often involving state and federal funding and other tax incentives, related to multifamily and affordable housing, mixed use mill conversions, retail and other commercial developments. He has also been involved in the due diligence, permitting and development of over units of multifamily and affordable housing developments. Over the past several years he has also been involved in the rezoning and/or permitting of over 9 million s.f. of e-commerce, warehouse and distribution facilities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. John has been named in Best Lawyers New England in the field of Real Estate, and his firm has been ranked Tier 1 Metro Boston by Best Law Firms. John was appointed by Governor Charlie Baker and formerly served on the Governor\'s Economic Development Planning Council which was charged with assisting in the development of the Commonwealth\'s Economic Development Plan. John was also appointed by Governor Baker and formerly served as a Member of the Board of Directors of the UMASS Building Authority. John formerly served as the Chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee for the Homebuilders Association of Massachusetts, Inc, and formerly Co-chaired the Environmental Committee for NAIOP-Massachusetts. For 9 years, John served on the Board of Directors of Special Olympics Massachusetts, Inc. and served on its Governance Committee.
