About John Russell

An exceptional educational leader who facilitates student success. I am an experienced teacher, administrator, grant coordinator, and program director, whose efforts have helped to transform students\' lives. I began my career in education as an award-winning instructor in over 20 classroom and independent study preps including: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Economics, World History, U.S History, CP & G, English I – IV, Latin I & II. As an instructional leader I have skillfully trained staff in pedagogy that drastically increased API Scores for two Title I schools and I was the driving force in building a college bound culture at those schools such that at-risk students have directly attended competitive, quality four-year universities. I have coordinated and/or written numerous successful grants (Century 21, WIOA, CAEP, First Five and others) and have utilized my superior technical writing skills for WASC reports, schoolwide plans, course outlines, pacing guides, benchmarks, board reports, and School Site Council reports, among many other reports and deliverables. I am currently serving as Regional Director for the Citrus College Adult Education Consortium and Pasadena Area Consortium and as Assistant Principal for Adult Education for the Monrovia Unified School district.

1. Assistant Principal for Adult Education and Alternative Programs

   In my current role at the Monrovia Community Adult school, I have been a driving force in expanding Career Technical Education opportunities to benefit regional students in need of short term vocational training. I have been part of the planning and implementation of using California Adult Education Program (CAEP) funds to improve programs and services for English Learners, adults who need to attain a high school diploma or high school equivalency, and adults who wish to reenter the workforce. I complete all MUSD CAEP compliance and reporting to ensure that $1.7 million in state funds are spent according to state allowable uses guidelines and to maximize funding effectiveness.I have a tremendous understanding of the Workforce Development system and have used that expertise to dramatically increase MCAS WIOA Title I fees and to significantly improve partnerships with LA Regional Workforce Development Board (WDB) and America\'s Job Center of California (AJCC) staff.In my previous role as an Assistant Principle and Instructor at at Canyon Oaks High School and Mountain Park School, two alternative Title I schools, I transformed curriculum and instruction to dramatically increase test scores and build a college bound culture for socioeconomically disadvantaged students. At those schools, I was an instructional leader who increased effectiveness of Curriculum & Instruction such that API scores increased over 60% during a seven year span. I have used and trained staff in a variety of proprietary education software including: TOPSpro Enterprise, ASAP, Aeries, Odysseyware, Edgenuity, Google Classroom, Apex, Data Director, Illuminate, IntelAssess, NovaNET, SchoolLoop among many others.I am most proud of the fact that since 2010 20%-30% of COHS and MPS graduates have been accepted directly to four-year universities, including Columbia University, NYU, Grinnell College, Reed College, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and every Cal State among many others.
