Lotus designs and manufactures a range of sports cars and complements this with offering engineering services. The new majority shareholder Geely has injected substantial capital and provided access to its range of automotive technologies and IT systems. Lotus has now embarked on an ambitious drive to create new products whose design and manufacture will be underpinned by advanced IT systems. My first project at Lotus was to take the corporate PLM system, built on Siemens TeamCenter from Geely and deploy this into Lotus. In 6 months, we installed the system at Lotus, trained 80+ engineers and provided the PLM platform for the first vehicle. For the past 2 years the system has grown to a user base of 300 + users covering design activities, manufacturing and aftersales. The corporate PLM system provides the company with a true digital twin controlling the mechanical, electronic and software. As the product develops, we must adjust the out of the box solutions for the unique requirements for Lotus. This can range from simple process methods to bespoke automation. We concluded that the corporate PLM did not have the flexibility that a low volume complex engineered product required. We created an on-site TeamCenter database that can be rapidly configured to the unique requirements of the program. This provides a platform to manage other low volume car programs and 3rd party engineering work. The 2 PLM platforms provide the company with a comprehensive solution to manage all of product development.
