About John Mitchell
John Mitchell is the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, Michigan. He is also Professor and Vice Chair of Anesthesiology at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Mitchell is a nationally recognized educator, and educational researcher. At BIDMC, he was selected as Departmental Teacher of the Year by residents a record four times and received the S.Robert Stone Award for outstanding Medical Student Teaching from Harvard Medical School. He was a Rabkin Fellow in medical education and later Co-Directed this fellowship program for Harvard Medical School and BIDMC. He has lead multiple funded efforts exploring topics in education research and has received over a dozen awards for educational research, including the Dr. Phillip Liu Award for Educational Research in 2017 and 2021 and the Association of University Anesthesiologists inaugural EAB Education Research Award in 2022. Nationally, he serves as President for the Society for Education in Anesthesia, Vice Chair for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) OSCE Committee and a Physician Research Consultant for the the ABA Research Committee. He is President for the Inter Hospital Study Group. He is also a member of the FAER Academy of Education Mentors in Anesthesiology and an SEA/ASA Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology.Clinically, he provides care for cardiothoracic, liver transplant, and general surgical patients.His research interests include technical skills training, optimizing resident performance, and increasing educational efficiency. He enjoys collaborating to explore best practices in teaching and learning and mentoring other educational researchers.
