ABOUT JOHN MCGRATH

As a Principal Scientist at Ampersand Biomedicines - a Flagship Pioneering company - I lead the Microfluidic Instrument & Assay Development Team. Prior to this, at Sphere Fluidics Limited, my role was focused upon the development of novel droplet microfluidic instrumentation, used to expand Sphere Fluidics’ portfolio of microfluidic instruments for advanced biologics discovery. From May 2019 until July 2020, I was employed as a Senior Researcher and Scientific Project Manager within EVOdrops ITN at the University of Glasgow. EVOdrops, an abbreviation for \"directed EVOlution in DROPS\", is a translational approach for droplet microfluidics and biochemical methods towards the engineering of proteins, cells and other biological systems of industrial or therapeutic interest.Prior to employment in Glasgow, I worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher within the School of Engineering and Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia (UVa). As a postdoc, I continued to pursue my own research interests, which incorporate microfluidics, MEMS and microfabrication for the development of microfluidic single-cell sorting and detection technologies. Particular technologies of interest include microfluidic impedance cytometry, high-throughput sorting, dielectrophoresis, acoustofluidics, inertial and droplet microfluidics, plus the integration of these technologies. In 2017, I attained a PhD in Biotechnology and, in 2013, a first class honours in Cell & Molecular Biology from Heriot-Watt University (UK). During my PhD, I worked on the development of microfluidic systems for the species-level detection and viability determination of waterborne pathogens. While completing the latter years of my undergraduate degree, I worked in industry as a Microbiologist. To see a list of publications, please visit either- my scholar profile: & hl=en- or my researchgate:
