ABOUT JOHN MATLOCK
I am a senior management administrator with nearly two decades\' experience building meaningful external relationships, organizing/leading internal teams, securing funding, and structuring events/content to grow stakeholder and public audience interest. In areas of science, technology and innovation, I helped position the Perimeter Institute (PI), Ontario and Canada as global leaders in theoretical/computational physics research, training and educational outreach. After nearly 20 years with Perimeter I shifted to providing on-call services for organizations wishing supplementary help with external relations, government relations, media relations, marketing, communications, outreach and events - particularly involving cross-sector initiatives. My background: • Since 2004 I had the privilege of working at Perimeter Institute in many senior positions, playing a consequential role in its growth from a start-up into the global force it became. Alongside talented leaders, admin teams and researchers, I helped develop and managed many of the communications, marketing and outreach strategies that define PI today. Our efforts were recognized in 2008 with the NSERC Michael Smith Award for Science Promotion, a Canadian honour, and in 2012 I was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the Governor General for exemplary contributions to the Perimeter community and Canada. I also played key roles in the establishment of the Perimeter Institute Quantum Intelligence Lab, in the teamwork for top provincial and federal investments into PI, and in seeding new org-to-org partnerships. • I served as a board member of Canada’s Science and Technology Awareness Network and the Waterloo Global Science Initiative. I also provided insights on the Quantum Valley ecosystem for numerous organizations, international trade missions, and other cross-sector delegations to the Region of Waterloo. • Prior to joining Perimeter, my career included five years helping grow a family business to successful exit, and nearly twenty years in broadcasting and journalism – including Senior News Producer with CTV Southwestern Ontario and Producer-Director with the nation’s public broadcaster on CBC’s The Journal (later merged into The National). I contributed to many newsroom team honours, including an Edward R. Murrow International Award.
