About John Marsh
I have managed and executed research and development projects from inception to final implementation. I have led, managed and motivated diverse teams of individuals, contractors, consultants and service providers to deliver professional and competent project outcomes. I am a highly focussed person and can bridge (and balance) the divide between the key business drivers and the detailed requirements of developing, managing and delivering high quality technical projects. I have worked in the chemical and metallurgical industries for the past 30 years, after qualifying with a PhD in chemistry. My recent focus has been on providing leadership and driving operational, tactical and strategic initiatives for the development of practical technologies in metallurgical and energy processes. I care deeply about the creation and sustenance of motivated teams capable of delivering on clear goals. My employment experience has been with five organisations in the United States, Canada and South Africa. These are: Redwood Materials (2024 to present), Sherritt International Corporation (2013 – 2023), Anglo American – 2013) AECI (1996 – and Mintek (1993 – 1996). I have diverse skills that range from a deep and thorough understanding of process technology, through the relevant aspects of chemical process engineering, techno-economic modelling, project management and team leadership through to product strategy and business development. I have been actively involved in the development, management and leadership of systems and strategies for the identification, conceptualization, development and commercialization of new and novel technologies, with a broad focus on metallurgical and hydrocarbon processes. These include pressure hydrometallurgy, solid state and gas state pyrometallurgy (including microwave processing), electrochemical applications, artificial intelligence applications, hydrocarbon processing using Sherritt\'s slurry reactor technology (coal liquefaction, bitumen upgrading and vacuum residue conversion). At Sherritt, I led a diverse engineering and project management team within Sherritt Technologies that was tasked with providing engineering services to external parties and internal Sherritt clients as well as managing the execution of strategic development projects. Most recently, I have led a team responsible for the process design of a cathode active material (CAM) flow sheet at Redwood Materials in Nevada.
