About John Marion

I am currently the Training Director for Electric Power Systems. My day to day job duties include reporting on incidents, writing new course material, giving classes on protection and controls, generating processes and procedures as well technical review and field support. My previous role at EPS was Substation Protection & Controls Design Engineer for Electric Power Systems. I also still support our field group doing relay and equipment testing (transformers, wires, breakers, ect.) as well as system functional tests. In addition to relay and equipment testing I also perform commissioning engineering responsibilities, including CAPE fault simulations, and testing review and witnessing. I have worked with SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Labs) doing root cause analysis, and repair. I have also worked with General Electric Wind where I did maintenance, and operations. I have experience working with three-phase systems, high voltage electronics, SCADA, generators, hydraulics, transformers, and circuit breakers. I also have experience working with low voltage components such as micro-controllers, DSP\'s, FPGA\'s (Motorola, Freescale, Xilinx, Altera, ect.). I have led several projects during my career. I have led projects ranging from simple relay retrofits to full substation upgrades. I have worked primarily in the brownfield environment and have become a topic area expert in human performance in my current role.Specialties: High speed design, R.F, Communications and DSP, 3-phase high voltage power systems, solar energy, wind energy, generation,transmission and distribution protective systems.
