ABOUT JOHN KUNKA

Almost 40 years industry experience working for small independents, large independents, government agencies and major operators. My work has involved all aspects of exploration, appraisal, development and production geoscience. Lately I have been mostly involved in the subsurface aspects of field decommissioning. Specialties: Integrated studies in support of field appraisal and development e.g. petrophysics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, geochemistry, reservoir modelling, uncertainty. Also production geology e.g. well optimisation, producer-injector interactions etc. Lately, my work ha encompassed the subsurface aspects of field decommissioning. At face value this sounds very dull but in reality has turned out to be some of the most interesting and integrated work that I\'ve been involved in. I would describe it as a bit like exploration in reverse! In the past few years I\'ve become more interested in energy as a whole and energy balance or mix as this affects the industry I work in and our lives in general. We are currently going through an energy revolution which has the potential to become very disruptive hence the reason I sometimes post links to articles to make people think about this. The fossil fuel business was until recently facing an existential threat but I\'m optimistic that there is still a future for our business in energy generation and gas will play a major part in this alongside nuclear, coal and renewables. Recent events in the gas market show just how vulnerable we are if we only have a Plan A!
