About John Kirby
Our major projects investigate intercellular interactions within bacterial communities in soil and gut (the microbiome). We study the role of specialized metabolites in predator-prey dynamics in many soil bacteria related to Bacillus subtilis & Myxococcus xanthus. Our work has expanded the understanding of chemosensory systems and two-component signal transduction systems (TCS) and demonstrated versatility for these signaling systems during regulation of cell behavior. We have extended our investigations to the role of specialized metabolites in the regulation of microbial communities in the gut. In particular, we are interested in how weight gain results from the effects of xenobiotic disruption of gut microbial communities.
