About John Kiefer

Environmental engineer and ecologist with substantial experience restoring the topography, hydrology, water quality, and biological functions to severely disturbed waterbodies and their watersheds. Known for original research on stream classification and award-winning ecological restoration designs. Projects emphasize \'design with nature\' approaches that harness and process the available hydrology and material loads to fluvial systems for sustainable and resilient environmental and social value. Adroit at matching the scope and scale of the solution to that of the problem. Design philosophy is to provide highly functional systems with a natural beauty that fits their setting and matches the needs of the community. Currently mentoring and empowering the next generation of masterful ecosystem restoration designers. Constantly seeking environmental and community improvement through research, persistence, and teamwork. Much of my work occurs in areas with naturally pronounced seasonal drought, high-volume flood pulses. and highly variable inter-annual and multi-decadal rainfall and streamflow patterns enabling useful and portable experience and perspectives in areas where climate change is amplifying hydrologic variance.
