The Boston Children\'s Hospital Heart Center\'s Translational Research Lab is developing solutions to problems in intensive care medicine related to oxygen. We are developing new techniques for the administration of oxygen, for protecting against reperfusion injury, and for enhancing our understanding of tissue dysoxia. We have multiple collaborations with industry and a diverse team of engineers, chemists, statisticians and computer programmers who contribute to this work.

ABOUT JOHN KHEIR
I consider it an awesome privilege to care for critically ill patients in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Boston Children’s Hospital. I absolutely love it. I treasure the moments that I spend walking with patients and families through what are sometimes the hardest moments of their lives. I love making our field approachable for parents and trainees, talking about physiology, leading clinical studies, mentoring fellows and faculty, and leading the ICU team. But it gets even better. For the past 15 years, I have had the privilege of being able to walk out the front door of the hospital 50 feet and into the front door of the Enders Research Building, where I lead a team of scientists and programmers to change the problems that we all see at the bedside. We are creating new drugs - like intravenous oxygen and inhaled hydrogen - to decrease brain injury in crisis situations. But what has me more excited than anything else is that we are creating a software platform to change the bedside experience for all. Information is too spread out. Healthcare could be 100x more efficient and safer and more fun with better technology - technology that is born at the bedside and aligns with our cognition. Technology that unifies all aspects of care into one seamless process. That makes doing the right thing the easy thing - not through a reactive NetLearning but through improved tech that ‘understands’ the clinical situation and helps us do the right thing. The opportunity before us is immense. I am excited for the future of medicine - but only if it changes from the inside out.
