ABOUT JOHN ELMER

Dr. Elmer is a metallurgist specializing in the field of materials joining. He has authored or coauthored more than 160 technical papers on topics in the areas of materials joining, additive manufacturing, metallurgy, laser and electron beam processing. He is a Fellow and Honorary Member of the American Welding Society (AWS), a Fellow of ASM International (ASM), Senior Member of Member of TMS, a registered Professional Engineer, and holds over 20 U.S. patents. Elmer has received many awards from AWS, including the Yoshiaki Arata Award from the International Institute of Welding for “Extraordinary achievements in fundamental research in welding science and technology.”John Elmer currently serves on numerous committees for ASM International, TMS, and AWS, is on the editorial review board for The Welding Journal, Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, and The Science and Technology of Welding and Joining. He also serves as adjunct professor to the Pennsylvania State University.Specialties: Research areas include Welding (laser beam, electron beam, arc welding processes), Additive manufacturing including wire-arc robotic based AM (WAAM), Soldering for Electronic Packaging, Brazing, Microstructure-Property Relationships, Phase Transformations, Solidification, Failure Analysis, In-situ Synchrotron-based X-Ray Diffraction and computed tomography (CT), Materials Characterization, Laser and Electron Beam Diagnostics.
