About John Egan

Lt. John A. Egan Sr. is a retired firefighter from the City of Woonsocket RI, and now is the founder and director of FireSmartKids, a juvenile firesetter intervention & education program serving families throughout New England. As a Woonsocket firefighter, John developed and implemented the Greater Woonsocket Juvenile Firesetter Intervention program that provided intervention services to family’s through-out Rhode Island, Southeast Massachusetts and Northeast Connecticut. John has a degree in Fire Science from the Community College of RI. He is a Pro-Board certified Fire Service Instructor, A IFSAC certified Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Specialist I, and has completed the Juvenile Specialist II class & the Youth Firesetter Intervention & Prevention Class at the National Fire Academy He also completed the Youth Set Fires Investigation class offered by the IAAI John serves on a number of local & national fire safety education committees, he has spoken at a number of national juvenile firesetter and fire safety conferences and is the Vice Chair of the Northeast Youth Firesetter Task Force. He serves on the NFPA Technical Professional Qualification Committee overseeing the 1035 standard for Fire & Life Safety Educator, Juvenile Firesetter & Public Information Officer; he chaired the sub-committee of the juvenile Firesetter section of the standard for this revision cycle of those qualifications. John was recently appointed to the Community College of RI’s Fire Science Degree Advisory board, and is an Adjunct Instructor for the National Fire Academy’s Youth Firesetter Intervention & Prevention program.
