ABOUT JOHN BUCUVALAS
My overriding goal is for kids who require liver transplant to live full and meaningful lives. I focus my work to ensure the best possible outcome as defined by patient experience and value. I seek to do so by delivering the best care acquiring and applying new knowledge and improving the delivery system. To do so, we focused on the tiers of outcome as defined by Michael Porter (NEJM 2010) and the path of the patient. Besides clinical expertise, my impact has required a collaborative leadership with clear vision and commitment to remove barriers, optimal function of teams, effective data management and analytics, an understanding of improvement science, a rigorous patient based research system and a commitment to attract, develop, and retain critical personnel and talent. I have published broadly on outcomes following liver transplantation. I have established strong ties with pediatric solid organ transplant community thru NIAID, ITN and CTOT. I also have strong ties and collaborations with the liver transplant community thru SPLIT, AST and UNOS. All together, I have had to recognize the critical role of knowledge, social and physical capital, understand the complexity of the system and defer to expertise. The learnings from this patient population may be applied to other complex and chronic conditions.
